Climbing South Sister
June 28, 2006

Jill pauses on the Wickiup Plain, about 1.5 miles along the route to the summit of South Sister.

Eric trudges off into the distance as the Wickiup Plain begins to slope up into the flanks of the mountain.

A typical pumice slope on a high ridge, perhaps 600 feet below the summit. All the real snow was down below.

Jill curses Eric's name as she pauses for a breather on the final push to the summit.

Jill looks a wee bit tired as she takes shelter from the wind in a small windbreak constructed of pumice stones by previous climbers.

Climbers beware! This vicious predator haunts the summit crater, ready to pounce at moment's notice. While we explored the crater, he managed to chew a small hole in Eric's pack and make a mess of Jill's trail mix and dried fruit.

On the true summit, a high point on the crater rim, a view of Jill along with Middle and North Sisters.

Eric on the descent down the pumice slopes.

Nearly the entire route includes a smashing view of nearby Mount Bachelor, seen here with a small glacier-melt lake in the foreground.

And to the east, Broken Top is a constant companion along the route.
