Snow hiking Camp Muir
May 26, 2007
We had an abbreviated Memorial Day Weekend trip to Mount Rainier. We camped two nights at the ever-lovely Cougar Rock Campground, spending one day on a conditioning hike up to Camp Muir, and one day practicing climbing skills around Paradise. Fun. Snowy.

With snowshoes strapped to his back, Eric trudges up the route to Camp Muir.

We're getting there. Jill pauses for a rest with a nice view of the Nisqually Glacier behind her head.

The final long slog to Muir. The camp is just visible in the right of this photo as a dark spot above the line of climbers heading up the Muir Snowfield. Also, a good look at Gibraltar Rock.

Eric, during lunch at Camp Muir, elevation 10,080 feet above sea level. It was nearly a 4,700 foot climb up from Paradise to here. Behind him you can see, from left to right, the guide hut, a solar composting toilet, and the ranger hut.

During lunch the weather rolled in. Here's Jill at Camp Muir, just before our depature back down the mountain. Behind her is another neat-o solar composting toilet and, faintly visible in the fog, the historic stone climber's hut.
Oh, we also got a life-lister here, thanks to Jill's birding prowess. Several gray-capped rosy-finches were bobbing around the stone walls and snow looking for food.

Back down below the clouds, here's a look at the nearby Tatoosh Range from Panorama Point.
