Day 9: To the Highlands
By Eric
I was beginning to recover by now and we made some large decisions. First, we decided to skip Sumatra. We'd been hearing mixed reports from other traveller's and forest fires there were still raging out of control. Second, we decided to spend our time instead exploring Peninsular Malaysia's remoter east coast. So we bought unbelievably cheap airline tickets there, leaving in a few days time. In the meantime, we decided to visit the Cameron Highlands, a mountainous region in interior Malaysia that is know for its relatively cool climate (I say "relatively"), English colonial feel, tea plantations, and interesting cuisine. That afternoon, we caught a bus up into the mountains. We stayed at a hostel in the crumbling remains of an old colonial mansion, run by a wonderful Indian family. That night, down in the little town, we feasted on a terrific Indian dinner of Tandoori chicken.
