Day 6: Jungle fever

By Eric

In the morning, we took a 50 cent ferry across the river into the national park and into Malaysia's jungle. Preferring to avoid the beaten track we day-hiked out from the park headquaters to a small hill overlooking the surrounding region. We were certainly not acclimated to the crushing heat and humidity, but we persevered and were lucky enough not to see any other people that day. We did, however, discover our first leeches, which left rivulets of blood down my legs. Worse, by afternoon, a nagging sense of malaise was growing into what was unmistakably a fever. I felt awful. That night, lying in our sweat-soaked bed, in a tiny room without air conditioning, I knew that I was well and truly sick as my temperature pushed up well over 100.
