Another Week Gone?
By Jill
When we resurrected BobRat, I thought it’d be a cinch to write a post once a week. And yet, here we are in week four and I’ve only posted once.
I’m discovering that there’s a big difference in the amount of time you have for reflection when you’re traveling and when you’re at home. Traveling, your time is no one’s but your own. At home, jobs, bills, random errands, friends, family, and high maintenance cats demand attention. It’s easy to get swept away by it all, never stopping to think.
The fact that I’d been swept away by life hit me this weekend. Eric and I took a long bike ride around Seattle, our first ride of the year. As we came through downtown and hit the Puget Sound, I got a good, long whiff of salt water, one of the things I love most about Seattle. I was instantly struck with the realization that it had been weeks, perhaps even a month, since I’d smelled the Sound’s salt water.
Now wait a minute. I live about one mile from the Sound, and I work roughly five blocks from the Sound. What am I doing stopping to appreciate Seattle’s fantastic salt air only once a month, twice if I’m lucky?
I’m not sure there’s much we can do to keep everyday life from distracting us from the things we love. But I do hope that I occasionally remember to stop and smell the salt water. (And maybe write a BobRat post or two.)
